The Importance of Self-Defence in London
In a couple of our previous blogs, we’ve spoken about the importance of security in London. Unfortunately, our capital has seen a notable spike in attacks over the past few years (or, at least, more have been reported on).
It is, therefore, important that you know how to look after yourself in the unlikely event that you’re caught up in a difficult situation. Below, Umbrella Security Services take a look at some of the most basic points you should consider if you spend a lot of time in London.
Avoid obvious risks
That dark alleyway after 8pm? Yeah, probably best just to take another route. The same can be said for any known (or obvious) risky area. Just don’t go there. Try to travel in groups if you have to be out late, and just use your common sense. You’re unlikely to be attacked in broad daylight in the middle of Trafalgar Square, so do what you can to remain in the areas that are busiest.
Priority number one in any potentially threatening situation is escape. Obviously, that’s not always possible, but if you can get away you eliminate any chance of harming yourself. Don’t try to be a hero if you don’t know what you’re doing; that’s the job of trained police officers and security guards.
Shout for help
If escape isn’t an option, make yourself heard. Generally speaking, attackers won’t stick around too long if they think there’s a chance they could end up outnumbered. Get someone’s attention, and you give yourself a decent chance of receiving help. Carrying round items such as rape alarms is a good idea, but just yelling at the top of your voice also isn’t a bad idea.
Learn martial arts
Martial arts aren’t only for people looking to achieve their black belts. They’re also extremely useful in a number of real-life situations. The vast majority will teach you applied self-defence, giving you the ability to look after yourself. While all martial arts have their advantages, some of the best for self-defence include:
- Mixed martial arts
- Jiu jitsu
Any of the above would be better than nothing, and there are plenty of other options out there for you to consider – just do a bit of research, see what’s nearby, and head on down to a class.
It’s extremely common to see people walking through London, blissfully unaware of their surroundings. Not only does this pose a bit of a traffic hazard, but it also makes being attacked far more likely. Sure, use your phone, but keep your eyes up and leave the headphones out. It can be all too easy to completely ignore everything around you in the modern day; phones are so full of information and games that people often become distracted, especially on routine journeys like a daily commute.
